Enhancing Form & Function of the
Face, Jaws & Teeth
-
Most malocclusions (improper bite) can
be corrected by orthodontic treatment alone. There are some
instances, however, where the malocclusion is primarily caused by
abnormal growth of the upper or lower jaw or both. In these
instances, in order to establish proper jaw position and function,
surgery to reposition the improperly developed structures may be
required.
-
The primary purpose of treatment is to
establish a proper bite to prevent excessive forces on the teeth,
surrounding tissues and jaw joint (TMJ). These abnormal forces may
cause early loss of teeth, arthritis and/or pain in the joint,
facial muscles, neck or even headaches.
-
Maxillofacial surgery involves the most
visible and aesthetically important part of the body, the face
Therefore in addition to establishing proper function, your
orthodontist and I will spend a great deal of time studying your
facial structures to insure optimum aesthetic as well as functional
results.
-
The surgical correction usually follows
a period of orthodontic treatment and may involve a relatively minor
office procedure or may be a correction involving a minimal hospital
stay.
-
We desire the best results for you.
Please allow yourself the opportunity to be educated so you may make
an informed decision to proceed or defer treatment based on the facts involved in your particular
case.
